BIMI: how to show your logo next to your emails in Gmail
Reviewed
Short answer
BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) lets inboxes show your logo next to your messages. It only works once your domain can’t easily be forged: DMARC must be set to p=quarantine or p=reject. Then publish a TXT record at default._bimi.<your domain> pointing to your logo as an SVG Tiny PS file. Gmail and Apple Mail also require a Verified Mark Certificate or Common Mark Certificate; Yahoo can show the logo without one.
Is your DMARC ready for BIMI?
Why it requires DMARC enforcement first
A logo is a trust signal, so inboxes only show it for domains that tell them to reject or quarantine forgeries. With DMARC at p=none, a BIMI record is ignored. That makes BIMI a useful reward at the end of the DMARC rollout rather than a starting point.
What to publish
- DMARC at p=quarantine or p=reject, applied to all mail (no pct below 100).
- Your logo as an SVG in the Tiny PS profile, square, served over HTTPS.
- A TXT record named default._bimi with v=BIMI1; l=<logo URL>; a=<certificate URL>. The a= part is the mark certificate, if you have one.
The certificate question
A Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) requires a registered trademark for the logo; a Common Mark Certificate (CMC) can be issued for a logo you have used publicly for some time. Both are issued by certificate authorities and renewed yearly. Gmail and Apple Mail show logos only with one of them; Yahoo shows BIMI logos for senders with good reputation without a certificate.
